The Builders Are Winning
Huang made headlines this week with a forecast that sounded almost old-fashioned coming from the world’s most valuable chipmaker: the AI boom, he argued, is going to be a jobs machine for electricians, pipefitters, and construction crews, the people who physically build the power plants, cooling systems, and server farms that AI needs to run, according to IBTimes UK. In India, the buildout is turning into a full-blown industrial push. The global tech workforce has shrunk by more than 156,000 jobs, the Oman Observer reported, a number that lands squarely in the industry AI was supposed to supercharge, not shrink. In Israel, a hub long considered untouchable in the hi-tech world, 9,500 employees were laid off from tech firms in just the first half of 2026, according to the Jerusalem Post. These aren’t factory towns losing manufacturing jobs to automation the way past generations understood it. These are coders, testers, and support staff, the very workforce that built the tools now being blamed, at least in part, for thinning their own ranks.

Both things can be true simultaneously, and that’s precisely what makes this moment so slippery to analyze. The hubs, the chip fabs, the R&D centers, the OSAT plants Digitimes described, these are real jobs, but they skew toward engineers, technicians, and skilled trades building physical infrastructure. In other words, AI isn’t simply destroying jobs or simply creating them. It’s redrawing the map of which jobs exist at all, and the new map rewards different skills than the old one did. A young engineering graduate who expected to start in a junior developer role is now competing against AI coding assistants that can do a decent chunk of that entry-level work.
